Gentleman,
Is there a reason to upgrade to metal tracks?
What are the the pros and cons of these?
I noticed metal tracks add lots of weight, does that effect battery life?
Are some metal tracks better than others?

metal last longer then plastic if your tank needs more weight metal will help there  they do cost more a lot more it depends on what you want and they can affect how other parts wear put metal tracks on HL plastic suspension and it can bow them out I run metal on all my Tamiya Tanks and Asiatam hulls they can handel it HL tans can be updated for them with aftermarket parts to help on the weight of them I like impact metal tracks myself the pins lock better but will use matomart tracks for HL tanks if need to some guy's will stay with the plastic tracks and buy a few extra sets or links .

And for battery life I guess they do cut down on some battery life but ive never notice how much I buy higher mah packs for longer life any way .

Better appearance  - The extra weight allows the drive to cope with more sag in the track - if you remember, I had to abandon testing my desert 501st Tiger at Romeo because it shed its tracks every time I tried to turn Angry 1 less link per side just looks wrong...  Sad

Extra weight = more traction on rough ground

I agree with Martin on the weight/traction and the appearance of metal tracks.

One con to metal tracks is they don't give when the track picks up a rock or other piece of debris that sticks between the drive sprocket and track. I've noticed since I started that it only takes a rock of 1/8 to 3/16 size to lock up that side then your tank starts going in circles. Not a big problem except if your new and don't recognize whats happening and start rocking it back and forth or continue to operate the tank. Its very easy to strip a transmission or blow a board.

This is not a problem on our current battlefield, but if we go battle somewhere else, be aware that there maybe gravel or small stones on it.

For the new person that this happens too:
   1. STOP running the tank!
   2. Pick the tank up and find out where it is jammed
   3. Remove the offending rock or whatever from the track
Usually running the track back and forth by hand will dislodge the culprit!

Remember a 3/16 rock is the scale equivalent of a 3 inch rock in real life.

I agree with what both of you are saying but,
I am still waiting for my plastic ones to wear out.

Gee George Since your tank doesn't seem to move more than 3 or 4 feet it will probably take a long time to wear out those tracks. Kind of like an over glorified pillbox! HHHHHHHMMMMMM I smell a new nickname..........Pillbox George! Has kind of a catchy ring too it. LOL. But seriously it should take several years too wear out the plastic tracks

Why waste fuel moving when I can pick off the ronsons while idling.
But I guess we know who side you will be on when next we battle, since you
are picking on the largest member of The Dark Side.
May the force be with you!!

And so the smack talking begins...

Are we still on for a battle on Sunday? I don't want to spend the whole afternoon timing tank sprints... Undecided

I hope/plan to battle.
Thats only if I still have a tank and not just a pile of crap under my foot,
I have been trying improve my turret rotation since I tend not to have any.

George

PS It should be interesting battling on a flat surface, I expect lots more hits.

All of the tanks I am bringing have modified emitter tubes, so yes - you should expect to take a lot more hits...  Grin

Pillbox George,

Don't use the quick reply on your posts. Instead use the reply tab.
Now all you have to do is select the face you want

i changed the plastic tracks on my HL tiger one to metal to give a more realistic sag to the track when it runs over the road wheels and over the sprocket
